Save The Kiwi Writing

ZZZZZZZ, as the grey cloud lifts and the early morning sun shows, Ewik the Rowi Kiwi wakes to find he is sitting in a black box riding on a boat.

Ewik was extremely frightened, for he had never ever experienced this before and did not know what to do.

It took a very long time before Ewik found out that he was actually being rescued and delivered to a possum free island.

Ewik and his family were very relieved, for Ewiks brother had been attacked by possums the other day.

I hope this will make you save Kiwis too!

By Charlotte

Finally, we're there. After a long boat trip, to get on land feels great. I'm with BNZ to release some Kiwi's.

It's early on a Wednesday morning and very cold. I'm jumping with delight.

"CHIRP!!!" "What was that?" "Oh, that was a Kiwi". "1, 2, 3, release".

Now the Kiwis are on a predator free island. When the Kiwi's are teenagers they will be put back on a predator island.

By Molly.

"Save me someone save me! The scary stoats are coming! SAVE ME!! I'm down here! HEEEELP! Somebody put me on stoat island! My favourite feathery friends are in furry danger!"

"I need my meeeeeal! Get the stoat AWAY from me and my burrow! Mu-mmy! Daaaaaddy! HEEEEEE-EEELP! Come on! 1 year later...

"Where is the egg? Oh that's right it's under me. Haaaa Haaaa! Hey here's the ranger. Yes you can take the egg".

week 8

GUESS WHAT!!!

This week room 20 had fun setting up and looking around sci-tech! In the last few weeks we have been preparing our alarm in a box for our class stand at sci-tech!

We loved watching the America's Cup. On Friday we were watching it in the hall.

We also started our Aboriginal art (dot painting).

We also got skyped by Jax!

On the 13th of September it was Roald Dahl's birthday!

By Kate and Molly

Week 7

This week our class has been busy finishing our alarm in a box project for sci-tech.

We thought the patterns on people's boxes were really cool. Each person in our class had to have a maori design or symbol on their box. Most people chose to have a koru on their box.

We learnt how to make a circuit. The hardest thing was making the switch.

We had an awesome time this week.

By Alicia and Rowan.

Week 6

This week Room 20 has seen the year 6  production about the classical elements; wind, water, fire and earth. It had lots of comedy and music. We learnt that some things have to work together e.g. fire needs water most of the time so that it can be put out. We are looking forward to the next Year 6 production. I wonder what that will be like?

Week Four

This week Room 20 did lots of exciting things.

The highlight of the week was our Year 3 assembly!

We also did cross country at College Rifles. Room 20 did exceptionally well. We had several people in the top 10 for boys and girls.  Well done to Tegan, Lilly, Alicia, Matthew and Joshua. Sheppard was the winning house with the most points. The teachers looked silly dressed up in fluorescent colours pretending to be from the 1980's!

We have been learning a lot about electrical circuits. We know how to draw a circuit diagram and make it with brainbox.

Static Electricity

Take a look at this video to learn more about static electricity..

Static Electricity

Check out this link to roll a can with static electricity... Science Bob.

Try an experiment to test this out...

Create static electricityStatic Electricity Experiment
They say opposites attract and that couldn't be truer with these fun static electricity experiments. Find out about positively and negatively charged particles using a few basic items, can you control if they will be attracted or unattracted to each other?

What you'll need:
  • 2 inflated balloons with string attached
  • Your hair
  • Aluminium can
  • Woollen fabric
Instructions:
  1. Rub the 2 balloons one by one against the woollen fabric, then try moving the balloons together, do they want to or are they unattracted to each other?
  2. Rub 1 of the balloons back and forth on your hair then slowly it pull it away, ask someone nearby what they can see or if there's nobody else around try looking in a mirror.
  3. Put the aluminium can on its side on a table, after rubbing the balloon on your hair again hold the balloon close to the can and watch as it rolls towards it, slowly move the balloon away from the can and it will follow.
What's happening?
Rubbing the balloons against the woollen fabric or your hair creates static electricity. This involves negatively charged particles (electrons) jumping to positively charged objects. When you rub the balloons against your hair or the fabric they become negatively charged, they have taken some of the electrons from the hair/fabric and left them positively charged.

They say opposites attract and that is certainly the case in these experiments, your positively charged hair is attracted to the negatively charged balloon and starts to rise up to meet it. This is similar to the aluminium can which is drawn to the negatively charged balloon as the area near it becomes positively charged, once again opposites attract.

In the first experiment both the balloons were negatively charged after rubbing them against the woollen fabric, because of this they were unattracted to each other.

Hot and Cold Holidays

Hi guys,

We missed Tegan and Ruby as they were both away last week.

Ruby was relaxing in Fiji and getting her hair braided.

Check out what Tegan got up to... here!

Day One, Term 3!!!

We had a busy day in Room 20. Everyone was back and ready to get into their learning.

We learnt about Van Gogh and his art, and a little bit about his life. We discovered that his art developed over time - from looking dark and gloomy, to bright and with clear brush strokes.
The Potato Eaters, 1885

Twelve Sunflowers in a Vase, 1888
You can read more about him here... Van Gogh Information.

This is a great website for you to check out to find out more... Van Gogh Museum  Click here to have some fun... Make a diorama.

We also started thinking about our new topic - "DISCOVERY". We learned about the concept of "I see", "I think", "I wonder". We watched a short video clip and had a go at thinking deeply about what it was all about... Watch it again here. We came up with some great thoughts and will be looking at many more interesting clips to get us thinking throughout the term.

In maths we looked at division and fractions, and we began Roald Dahl's book Matilda in reading. We are looking at Roald Dahl this term, so we all got together and made a display on the wall for our work. Today we looked at how Dahl uses interesting words to describe his characters. We discussed how he gave us a really good impression of how "The Trunchbull" moves, sounds, and treats children. We all had a very clear image in our mind of what she would look like. We want to be able to describe characters in our own writing like this!

In week 3 we will have some visitors to the school. We need to practice their national anthem. Click on this link to learn and practice it! Australian National Anthem.

All in all we had a great first day and are very much looking forward to what the rest of the term brings...

Eels

Today we pretended to travel to Tonga with Mrs Elmore! We saw eels in our gully stream and we tracked the path that the eels from our stream take to have their babies.

We located the point where our stream meets the Orakei Basin, and we checked out where the Orakei Basin meets the sea. We know that from there the eels move from fresh water to salt water and continue to make their long journey. They travel way past Rangitoto and Great Barrier Islands, and swim all the way to a deep trench near Tonga. It is there that they have their babies. The parents then send their babies off without them, to make the long journey back to New Zealand.

We will post more later, but for now you can watch these clips to find out more about the NZ long fin eel....

Tongue Twisters

We have been getting our tongues in a tangle trying to say our tongue twisters quickly.

A tongue twister is a rhyme or a sequence of words that is difficult to say because it uses similar or repeated sounds. One of the reasons they are so hard to say is because they contain a lot of alliteration.

How quickly can you say our tongue twister without making a mistake?

Sally saw a see-saw while sailing on the sea.
Sally saw a sea shell on the sea shore.
Sally and Stella spilled some scoops of ice cream in the sea.
Stella saw seagulls on the sailing boat.

Ruby runs rudely on the rug to the rubber rugby ball while the rumbling rulers shake.

Celebrating Matariki

Earlier in June we celebrated Matariki. Matariki is the Māori name for the star cluster known as the Pleiades.
Traditionally for Māori when it appeared just before dawn in late May or early June, it signalled the start of the Māori New Year.
In the early 2000s the Māori Language Commission, the Ministry of Education and the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, became involved in the revival of Matariki celebrations.

Traditionally, Matariki was both a time to commemorate those who had passed on, and celebrate a time of plenty when stores were abundant from horticulture, hunting and fishing.

Jax, Mitchell, Caroline, Rowan and Kate all shared speeches about Matariki and we learnt a lot. We also learnt some string games for Matariki. We have decided to share our string games with you. Enjoy!

Games, as arts of pleasure, are an integral part of Māori life. Games are not restricted to a time or a place. This is particularly evident during Matariki festivities. Throughout pre-European New Zealand, the great Matariki Festivals were the annual catalyst for a broad spectrum of games development, invention and experimentation.
